About Ottawa Precision Chimney Sweep

Ottawa Precision Chimney Sweep is a small Ottawa crew with ladders, scaffolding and a camera on a stick. Pierre Gauthier owns it, and most weeks he is the one who climbs up to look at your chimney and writes the price.

How Ottawa Precision Chimney Sweep Started

Pierre grew up in Orleans, in a house where French and English got mixed up at the supper table. At 16 he carried mortar for a bricklayer on a school job, and he never really got off the scaffolding. He moved from bricks to chimneys in 2006, and started his own crew in 2015 with one truck and a long ladder.

Count it up since 2015 and it comes to about 1,100 chimneys swept, 240 caps, covers and crowns put on, 140 flues relined and close to 35 stacks rebuilt. Most of those jobs were small and found early. That's the whole idea: look often, fix small, and don't wait for the brick to come down.

We work with a short list of rules. Look before you price. Write the price down. Keep the soot in the flue and the dust off the carpet. Honestly, none of it is clever, but it is more than a lot of outfits manage, and it is why our customers call us back the next fall.

How we work

What You Can Expect From Us

  • A Straight Answer

If the chimney only needs a sweep, we say so. About half the chimneys we look at need nothing else.

  • A Price in Writing

We look first, then write it up. That number is the one on your invoice.

  • A Safe Roof

Scaffolding on tall stacks and a harness on every roof. Nobody skips it, including the owner.

  • A Clean House

Boots off, drop sheets down, soot vacuumed. You should not be able to tell we were there, except for the chimney.

From the owner

Why We Climb Up First

“You can't price a chimney from the driveway. Get on the roof, look at the cap, put your hand on the brick. Ninety per cent of the time the answer is right there.”

Pierre Gauthier

Owner, Ottawa Precision Chimney Sweep

On chimneys since 2006. Pierre still takes most of the roof visits himself, and his harness and his tape measure ride in the truck every day.

Our reviews

Hear From Our Customers

  • Nathalie R.Orleans
    Chimney sweep and inspection
We have an old brick fireplace we finally wanted to use. Pierre's crew swept it, put a camera down the flue and showed us the screen. One cracked tile, no surprises, and the price was what they wrote.
  • Greg T.Kanata
    Chase cover
The cap on our Kanata townhouse was rusted through and the rain was running down the siding. New chase cover on in an afternoon and they cleaned the roof up behind them.
  • Sandra M.Nepean
    Chimney repointing
Our 1962 bungalow chimney had mortar falling out like sand. They repointed all of it in two days, matched the colour, and the scaffolding was gone by Friday.
  • Marc-Andre L.Cumberland
    Liner installation
They relined the flue for our new insert and sent photos of the whole job. Burned the first fire of the winter in November and no smoke smell anywhere.
  • Carol W.Barrhaven
    Flashing and leak repair
There was a wet stain on the bedroom ceiling next to the chimney. Turned out the flashing had pulled away. They fixed it in one visit, and the stain hasn't come back through two thaws.
  • Dave H.Carp
    Chimney rebuild
We bought an old stone farmhouse near Carp and the chimney scared me. They gave me a straight answer, a price in writing and a rebuild plan that fit my budget.
